Hard Hat Tour: Newport News Multi-Modal Transportation Center (1 LU pending)

The new multimodal station, located on Bland Boulevard near the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, is replacing the current Amtrak station on Warwick Boulevard about nine miles south of the new station. It will also be utilized as the hub for Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) buses, taxis, and airport shuttles servicing the airport.
The station will include a passenger waiting area with passenger information displays, along with an ADA compliant level boarding platform, modern amenities, and increased parking. A separate 4,050 square foot maintenance building, located onsite, will be able to service two trains at a time. The project also includes 10,000 linear feet of new rail, providing Amtrak with its own line to the station, rather than sharing rail lines with CSX Transportation, a Class I Freight Railroad.
The new transportation center is a partnership between the City of Newport News, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Once complete, the new center will serve as a gateway to the Hampton Roads region connecting the residents, visitors, and military personnel with enhanced rail and public transportation options to move around the region.
