Background:

AIAHR would like to partner with communities to create a temporary Pop-up Community Park that will highlight a need of green space in Norfolk. The Pop-up Community Park is intended to bring public awareness and build community through a creative design process.

Vision:

The idea is to bring vibrancy and beautify a space within a neighborhood/corridor in Norfolk to address the need for green space. This concept was derived from The American Society of Landscape Architects’ Parking Day and AIAHR’s would like to expand on this, while educatingcommunities on what architects do through a collaborative design process. We will highlightcommunity through creative design and urban infrastructure. The Pop-up Community Park willbe a temporary project that will be debuted on Architecture Day, October 2nd, 2023.

When:April 3rd

Where:Assembly’s Rooftop

Time:5:00-6:00PM

Who:Architects, Landscape architects, community residents, local businesses, anyone & everyone!

Positions to be filled:

Project Manager:

Preferably an architect
Host design charrette for community members to create a design in collaboration with volunteer architects
Designates Community Liaison (description below)
Oversees Community Liaison and executes the vision of the Pop-up Community Park
Meets bi-weekly with Community Liaison and/or volunteers to go over short or long term goals
Establish viable locations throughout the City of Norfolk (potential spaces provided below)
Educates volunteers and explains the design and overall processes
o Permitting, if needed
o Identifies water and electricity locations
Shows precedents of what the Pop-up Community Park vision will be

Community Liaison:

Assigned by the Project Manager
Point of contact between Community Ambassadors, volunteers and Project Manager
Recruits volunteers and assigns their roles
Checks in with Project Manager bi-weekly or more
Oversees and assigns Community Ambassadors who can lead small teams for specific tasks
Acts as a community champion to ensure the Project Manager and community are maintaining open communication

Community Ambassadors:

Assigned by the Community Liaison
Responsible for working with small groups within the community on specific tasks that the Project Manager would assign
Assists Community Liaison with communication throughout the community
Manages small groups of volunteers

The goal would be to debut the Pop-up Community Park on Architecture Day, October 2, 2023
